Outdoor Light Painting – Dave Black Style

I’m not going to lie when I say that light painting is one of my favorite styles of photography because it definitely is. I’ve never light painted outside so I was kind of nervous about doing this assignment but it was both easier and funner than I thought it would be. I think that the Dave Black approach to outside light painting is so cool so I was really excited to try it out for myself. As for the half orb, I loved learning how to do this. It’s crazy that a wheel with stringed lights can create these types of effects. I was definitely impressed with the results.

In order to get these effects on both pictures I had to use a long exposure. By using a long exposure, I was able to paint light on the house and spin the orb around before the shutter went off. As you can tell, both of these photos were taken at night so that’s why I needed time to paint light onto the little house and then spin the orb around. I had my ISO at 400, f stop at 18, and a 25 second self timer. It seems like a long time for a timer to be on but as I mentioned before, I needed time to paint light on the house with a flash light. Outdoor light painting is definitely something that I want to get more practice in because the results are so different but so beautiful.
